Use craft sticks to make a rustic patriotic sign perfect for Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day. This easy Americana decor take less than 30 minutes to make with Dollar Tree supplies.
This is just one of our 32 Fourth of July Crafts that are quick and easy to make.
Most of these supplies can be used to also make a variety of other patriotic craft stick crafts that I have listed below.
DIY Patriotic Sign Using Craft Sticks
All supplies, other than paint and ribbon, were purchased at the Dollar Tree.
Supplies
- 16 Jumbo Craft Sticks (Also available at Walmart)
- Jute Twine (about 24″)
- Silver Glitter Glue (Price is similar at Walmart)
- 6-inch Pieces of Ribbons, Lace, Trim, Baker’s Twine (Assorted Scraps in Red, White and Blue)
- Two 12-inch Pieces of Baker’s Twine
- Hot Glue Gun or Craft Glue
- Acrylic Craft Paint (Red, White, and Blue)
- Paintbrush
- Pencil with New Eraser
- Scissors
Directions
Step 1
To create the sign, line up seven jumbo craft sticks side by side. Glue a craft stick horizontally across the seven vertical popsicle sticks on the front top and front bottom.
Then cut additional two more craft sticks to be the width of the sign and glue in place on the back to secure the sticks.
Step 2
To create the star, use five jumbo craft sticks. Glue two craft sticks in an upside down “V” shape.
Glue a craft stick at a diagonal from the bottom right-hand side of the “V” shape. Then glue a craft stick at a diagonal from the bottom left-hand side of the “V” shape. This creates an “X” shape.
Finally, glue the fifth craft stick horizontally from the top right and left-hand side of the “X” shape.
Step 3
Paint the star with blue acrylic craft paint and the sign with red acrylic craft paint.
Let dry and apply a second coat, if needed.
Step 4
Using white paint, create a polka dot pattern on the star by dipping a new pencil eraser into the paint and then randomly dotting the pattern all over the star.
Once the white polka dots are dry, add small dots of silver glitter glue in the middle of each polka dot. Or customize however you would like!
Step 5
Cut a 10” length of twine and place vertically on your work surface.
Lay the 6” pieces of embellishment scraps in an “X” pattern over the vertical piece of twine. Use around 20 pieces (or more, if you’d like).
Tie the long piece of twine tightly around the center of the bundle and finish with a knot.
Step 6
To create a hanger, cut three 12” lengths of twine and/or ribbon. Tie the ends and the center into knots.
Step 7
Glue the star to the sign.
Then glue the bow to the center of the star. Trim any long ends with scissors.
Turn the sign over and glue the ends of the hanger to top right and left-hand sides. Allow to dry completely before hanging.
