DIY Firecracker Craft Using Popsicle Sticks

Materials

  • Free Firecracker Craft Pattern
  • Jumbo Craft Sticks (4 for each firecracker)
  • Craft Foam (Yellow and Orange)
  • Silver Tinsel Chenille Stem (one stem will work for 3 firecrackers)
  • Silver Glitter Glue
  • Wooden Star or Star Sticker
  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks or Craft Glue
  • Acrylic Craft Paint (Red, White, and Blue)
  • Paintbrush
  • Round Sponge Applicator
  • Scissors
  • Pencil

Instructions

Step 1

For each firecracker, line up three jumbo craft sticks side by side. With an additional craft stick, cut it down to size to fit across the three vertical craft sticks.

Glue the cut craft stick pieces towards the top and bottom of the firecracker base to stabilize and secure the sticks together.

Repeat the process for each firecracker you want to make.

Step 2

You can paint the firecrackers any way that you want. These instructions are for the paint patterns that we used.

For the flag firecracker:

Paint the top two inches of the firecracker with blue paint. Paint the remainder of the sticks with red and white paint, with red on the outermost popsicle sticks and white in the middle.

For the diagonal strip firecracker:

Paint the three craft sticks white. Let dry.

Using a wide paintbrush, apply red and blue stripes across the firecracker. Let dry.

Add stripes of silver glitter glue on the wide diagonal stripes.

For the polka dot firecracker:

Paint the three craft sticks blue. Let dry.

Using a small round sponge applicator, apply white polka dots and then red polka dots. Let dry.

Using silver glitter glue, add smaller polka dots to the blue base. Add silver stars on top of the large white polka dots.

Step 3

For the star on the American flag firecracker, paint a small wooden star with white paint. Let dry.

Apply a layer of silver glitter glue over the white base coat on the star.

Alternatively, you could use a star sticker or cut out a star shape from silver glitter craft foam.

Glue the star to the blue part of the flag firecracker.

Step 4

Cut one 12” silver tinsel chenille stem into three sections that are each 4 inches long.

Bend each 4″ section in half. Glue to the back of the top of the firecracker to be a fake fuse.

Step 5

Download and print out the Free Firecracker Craft Pattern. Cut out the patterns.

Trace the large flame onto the yellow craft foam twice, and onto the orange craft foam once.

Trace the small flame onto the yellow craft foam once and onto the orange craft foam twice.

Cut out all of the patterns with scissors.

Glue one large flame to the back of each fuse, leaving a little bit of the silver chenille stem showing as the fuse. Then glue a small flame pattern on top of the large flame, covering the silver chenille stem.
