Easy Popsicle Stick Flag for 4th of July

This cute popsicle stick flag craft is perfect for July Fourth and Memorial Day. It is an easy DIY project great for kids and adults using dollar store supplies.

This simple popsicle stick flag can be customized with the types of craft materials that you have available.

Variations include:

  • Cut out a star from glitter craft foam using our free pattern instead of buying a wooden star (we use similar stars in our 4th of July Rockets, too)
  • Use blue construction paper, felt or cardstock instead of craft foam. You could also use a wooden square painted blue.
  • You do not need a variety of ribbons to use as the hanger. You can use just one.

How to Make a Popsicle Stick Flag

Materials

  • Free Popsicle Stick Flag Pattern
  • 9 Jumbo Craft Sticks
  • Blue Craft Foam (or construction paper, card stock or felt)
  • Assorted Ribbon and Twine
  • Silver Glitter Glue (or silver glitter craft foam)
  • Wooden Star Cut Out (optional)
  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks or Craft Glue
  • Acrylic Craft Paint (Red and White)
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Pencil

Instructions

Step 1

To make the flag base, use seven jumbo craft sticks.

Paint the front and the outer sides of these sticks with white paint as a basecoat. Let dry completely.

Add an additional coat of white paint to three of the popsicle sticks.

Paint four of the craft sticks with red paint. Let dry and apply a second layer of red paint, if necessary.

Step 2

Paint the wooden star shape with white paint as a base coat.

After it has dried, apply a layer of silver glitter glue on top of the white wooden star.

Step 3

Line up the painted craft sticks on your work surface in alternating colors. We used a red popsicle stick on top, then a white, then a red, etc.

Next, flip over the popsicle sticks, making sure to keep the same alternating pattern.

Glue two unpainted popsicle sticks to the back of the flag perpendicular to the horizontal popsicle sticks. These sticks will help support the flag and keep the popsicle sticks together. You can use scissors to cut the popsicle sticks as needed so that they are hidden behind the flag and do not show.

Step 4

Print and cut out the free July 4th flag craft patterns.

Trace the large square pattern, which is the flag’s star field, onto blue craft foam. Cut out with scissors.

Step 5

Glue the blue square to the top left-hand corner of the craft stick flag.

Next, glue the silver star on top of the blue square.

Step 6

Using a variety of different types of ribbons and twine, measure 12” lengths and cut them. This will be the hanger for your popsicle stick flag.

Flip the flag over, with the painted side facing down, and glue the ends of each piece of ribbon or twine to the outer edges of the back of the flag.
