Crochet Sunflower Granny Square (Step by Step Guide)

When you combine the cheerfulness of sunflowers with the classic retro look of a granny square, you get a crochet sunflower granny square!

This tutorial will show you how to make a variation of a granny square with a sunflower in the center. It is a great substitute for traditional granny squares in blankets, afghans and other crochet patterns.

How to Crochet a Sunflower Granny Square

Materials

• Crochet yarn – medium or medium light weight
• Crochet hook 3.5mm
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle

Instructions

Step 1

Using the yarn color for center of the crochet sunflower, tie a slip knot without cutting the yarn from the bundle.

Work 6 chain stitches.

Step 2

Form a ring with the chain by working a slip stitch into the first chain stitch.

Step 3

Work 1 chain stitch.

Step 4

Start working double crochet through the base ring.

Step 5

Work a total of 12 DC (double crochet) into the base ring. Work a slip stitch through the first top chain stitch to close the center part.

Pull out the yarn by a few inches and cut it off from the bundle.

Step 6

Select a yarn for the sunflower petal part. Start with a slip knot.

Step 7

Pull it through any stitch around the edge of the center part.

Step 8

Work 3 chain stitches.

Step 9

Work a TC (Triple Crochet) through the same chain stitch but do not pull through the last 2 loops, keep them on hook.

Step 10

Work another TC; again, do not pull through the last loop.

You should have a total of 3 loops on hook.

Step 11

Now, pull through all 3 loops at once.

Step 12

Work 3 chain stitches.

Step 13

Work 3 treble crochet through the next chain stitch, keep the last loops on hook like we did for the previous stitch. But this time you should have 4 loops on hook.

Step 14

Pull through all 4 loops at once. 

Step 15

Work 3 chain stitches again.

Step 16

Repeat the process until you have covered the 12 base stitches.

Step 17

Work a slip stitch through the first top stitch and pull out a few inches of the yarn.

Cut off extra yarn from bundle.

Step 18

Select a yarn for the granny square part.

Start with a slip knot and join the slip knot with the sunflower part through a 3 chain stitch gap.

Step 19

Chain 2 and work 2 DC through the same gap.

Step 20

Work 3 TC through the next gap.

Step 21

Work 2 chain stitches.

Step 22

Work 3 TC through the same gap.

This forms a corner of the granny square pattern.

Step 23

Work 3 DC through the next gap. Work another 3 DC through the next gap again. 

Step 24

Then, work the corner stitch (3 TC, chain 3 and 3 TC).

Step 25

Repeat this process until you’ve covered the flower through all 3-chain gaps.

Step 26

Work a slip stitch through the first top chain stitch to close the granny square part.

Step 27

Pull out a few inches of the yarn and cut it off from the bundle.

Use a tapestry needle to stitch the remaining end of the yarn over and under the pattern on the backside.
