Crochet Heart Granny Square (Step by Step Guide)

Show your love with a crochet heart granny square!

This tutorial will show you how to make a variation of a granny square with a heart in the center. It is a great substitute for traditional granny squares in blankets, afghans and other crochet patterns.

We used classic red and white colors to make this granny square, which is perfect for Valentines Day. Alternatively, you could use any color combination for these lovely squares all year round.

How to Crochet a Heart Granny Square

Supplies

  • Crochet Yarn (I used red and white)
  • Crochet Hook
  • Scissors

Directions

Foundation

Step 1

Using the yarn color for the center heart of the crochet granny square, make a Magic Ring without cutting the yarn from the bundle.

Work 2 chains.

Step 2

Work 12 double crochets into the magic ring by pulling the tail.

Step 3

Work a slip stitch to the third chain from the starting point.

Round 2

Step 1

Skip 1st stitch next to the loop and work 7 Treble Crochets into the 2nd stitch from the loop.

Step 2

Work 1 Double Crochet into next stitch.

Step 3

Work 2 Double Crochets into the next stitch.

Step 4

Work 2 Double Crochets into the next stitch.

Step 5

Work 2 Double Crochets into the next stitch and chain 1. Then work a Slip stitch to the base of chain 1 and work 2 more Double Crochets into the same stitch.

Step 6

Work 2 Double Crochets into the next stitch.

Step 7

Work 2 Double Crochets into the next stitch

Work 1 Double Crochet into the next stitch

Work 7 Treble Crochets into the next stitch

Step 10

Skip the next stitch and work a Slip Stitch into the 2nd stitch from the loop

Step 11

Work a Slip Stitch into the starting point of round 2 and then cut the yarn off by leaving a little tail. Then fasten up by using the yarn needle.

Round 3

Step 1

Start with a Slip Knot using white yarn.

Step 2

Join the new color into the heart as shown in the picture with a chain stitch

Step 3

Chain 3, then work 1 double crochet into next stitch.

Step 4

Work 1 half double crochet into next stitch. Then 1 single crochet into next stitch.

Step 5

Work 5 double crochets into next stitch. Then work 1 half double crochet into each one of the next 3 stitches.

Step 6

Work 1 Double Crochet into each one of the next 2 Stitches.

Step 7

Work 1 Treble Crochet into next Stitch. Work 3 Double Treble Stitches and 2 Treble Stitches into the next stitch.

Step 8

Work 1 Double Crochet into the next stitch, then 1 half double crochet into the next stitch, then 1 single crochet into the next stitch.

Step 9

Work 1 slip stitch into the front loop of the next stitch, then 1 single crochet into the next stitch and then 1 half double crochet into the next stitch.

Step 10

Work 1 Double Crochet into the next stitch, then work 2 Treble Stitches and 3 Double Treble Stitches into the next stitch.

Step 11

Work 1 Treble Crochet into next stitch, then work 1 double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches.

Work 1 half double crochet into each one of the next 3 stitches.

Work 5 double crochets into next stitch.

Work 1 single crochet into next stitch, then 1 half double crochet into next stitch.

Step 1

Chain 2, then work 1 double crochet into the same stitch.

Work 1 double crochet into each one of the next 5 stitches.

Work 3 double crochets into each one of the next 2 stitches.

Work 1 double crochet into each of the next 8 stitches.

Step 5

Work 3 double crochets into each one of the next 2 stitches.

Work 1 double crochet into each one of the next 11 stitches.

Work 1 double crochet into each one of the next 8 stitches.
