How to Crochet a Ghost Granny Square

This free crochet pattern uses beginner crochet stitches. You may want to familiarize yourself with these stitches if you are new to crocheting.
We suggest using a small hook, such as a 2.3 mm crochet hook.
Black and white yarn are classic color choices, but don’t be afraid to choose bold colors like orange, bright purple, neon green or even glow-in-the-dark yarn!
Foundation
Using White yarn, create a Magic Ring (mr). Do not cut the yarn.
Round 1
- Work 6 Single crochets (sc) into the Magic Ring to join.
- Pull the tail tight to close the Magic Ring and work a Slip stitch into the top of the first double crochet
Round 2
- Chain (ch) 1
- Work 1 Increase in each stitch around
- Work a Slip stitch into the top of the first single crochet to join.
Round 3
- Chain 1
- (1 Single Crochet, 1 Increase)* repeat 6 times
- Work a Slip stitch into the top of the first single crochet to join.
Round 4
- Chain 1
- (1 Single Crochet, 1 Single Crochet, 1 Increase)* repeat 6 times
- Work a Slip stitch into the top of the first single crochet to join.
Round 5
- Chain 3
- Work 1 Double Crochet (dc) in same stitch
- Work 1 Single Crochet in next stitch
- Work 1 Slip Stitch in next stitch
- Chain 3, Work 1 Double Crochet in same stitch, work 1 Single Crochet in next stitch
- Work 1 Slip stitch in next stitch, chain 3, work 1 double crochet in same stitch, work 1 single crochet in next stitch, work a slip stitch in next stitch
- (1 Increase, 1 Single Crochet, 1 Single Crochet, 1 Single Crochet)* repeat 4 times; 1 increase in last stitch
- Work a Slip stitch into the top of the first stitch to join.
Round 6
- Work 1 Single Crochet in right slide of the 1st weave
- Work 1 Increase on top of 1st weave
- Work 1 Single crochet in the left stitch of 1st weave
- Work 1 Slip Stitch in next stitch
- Work 1 Single crochet in right stitch of 2nd weave, 1 increase on top of the 2nd weave, 1 single crochet in left stitch of 2nd weave, 1 slip stitch in next stitch
- Work 1 Single Crochet on right side of 3rd weave, 1 increase on top of 3rd weave, 1 single crochet on left side of 3rd weave, slip stitch in next stitch
- Fasten off white yarn
Round 7
- Join Black yarn into corner stitch (Insert the hook in the stitch, pull the black yarn through the stitch, yarn over, and pull through the loop)
- Chain 1
- Work 2 Half Double Crochets (hdc) in the same base stitch
- Work 1 half double crochet in each of next 3 stitches
- Work 1 single crochet in each of next 2 stitches
- Work 1 half double crochet in each of next 3 stitches
- Work 3 half double crochet in next stitch
- Work 1 half double crochet in each of next 2 stitches
- Work 1 Double crochet in next stitch
- Work 1 half double crochet in each of next 5 stitches
- Work 1 double crochet in next stitch
- Work 3 double crochets in next stitch
- work 1 double crochet in next stitch
- Work 1 half double crochet in next stitch
- Work 1 single crochet in each of next 3 stitches
- Work 1 half double crochet in next stitch
- Work 1 double crochet in next stitch
- Work 3 double crochets in next stitch
- Work 1 double crochet in next stitch
- Work 1 half double crochet in each of next 5 stitches
- Work 1 double crochet in next stitch
- Work 1 half double crochet in each of next 2 stitches
- Work a Slip stitch into the 2nd chain from starting point to join.
Round 8
- Chain 3
- Work 1 double crochet in next stitch
- Work 3 double crochets in corner stitch
- Work 1 double crochet in each stitch around while working 3 double crochets in each corner stitch
- Work a Slip stitch into 3rd chain from starting point to join.
- Fasten off black yarn
- Use the yarn needle to create the eyes and mouth of the ghost.
