DIY Yarn Wrapped Shamrock Sign

Make a farmhouse style St. Patrick’s Day decoration using dollar store supplies and our free pattern. This yarn wrapped shamrock sign is quick and easy to make for holiday decor.

How to Make a Yarn Wrapped Shamrock Sign for St. Patricks Day

Supplies

  • Free Shamrock Pattern
  • 9 Jumbo Craft Sticks
  • Yarn (Green and White)
  • Natural Jute Twine
  • Black Gingham Ribbon
  • Hot Glue Gun or Craft Glue
  • Scrap Piece of Corrugated Cardboard
  • Dark Brown Acrylic Craft Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors

Directions

Step 1

Line up seven jumbo craft sticks side by side on your table.

Glue a jumbo craft stick across the seven craft sticks on both the top and the bottom.

Step 2

Paint the craft stick sign with watered-down dark brown acrylic craft paint. Add a little bit of water to a small amount of brown paint to thin it out.

Paint the craft stick sign quickly with the brown paint and then remove the excess paint with a paper towel for a stained appearance.

If you would like a darker background, you do not need to wipe off the paint.

Step 3

Download, print and cut out the shamrock pattern. 

Trace the shamrock onto a scrap of corrugated cardboard. Cut out the shamrock.

Step 4

Tie the ends of green yarn and white yarn together in a knot.

Glue or tape the knot to the back of the cardboard shamrock.

Step 5

Start wrapping the two strands of yarn around the cardboard shamrock in a random fashion. After every fifth or sixth wrap, secure the yarn strands to the cardboard with a small dot of glue.

Be sure to wrap the yarn around the shamrock stem.

Continue wrapping the yarn around the shamrock in a random pattern until the cardboard is completely hidden.

Once done, tie the two ends of the yarn together in a knot and glue it to the back of the cardboard shamrock.

Step 6

Cut a 12” length of jute twine.

Glue the ends of the twine to top right and left-hand sides of the back of the sign.

Step 7

Glue the yarn wrapped shamrock to the front of the craft stick sign. Press down firmly in the center of the shamrock to make sure that it is securely attached.

Step 8

Tie the ribbon into a bow. Cut a notch in the ends of the ribbon tails to prevent fraying.

Glue to the front of the sign.
