Crochet Skull Granny Square (Free Pattern)

Our Skull Granny Square adds some gothic edge to a traditional granny square! It’s perfect for Halloween!

How to Crochet a Skull Granny Square

We suggest using a small hook, such as a 2.3 mm crochet hook.

Black and white yarn are classic color choices, but don’t be afraid to choose bold colors like orange, bright purple, neon green or even glow-in-the-dark yarn!

FOUNDATION

Using the yarn color for the center of the crochet skull granny square, make a Magic Ring (mr) without cutting the yarn from the bundle.

ROUND 1

  • Work 3 chains (ch).
  • Work 6 Treble Crochets (tr) into Magic Ring.
  • Chain 6
  • 1 Treble Crochet into Magic Ring.
  • Chain 4
  • 1 Treble Crochet into Magic Ring
  • Chain 6
  • 1 Treble into Magic Ring
  • Close the Magic Ring by pulling the tail
  • Work a Slip Stitch (sl st) to the 4th Chain from the starting point to join the round.

ROUND 2

  • Chain 1
  • 1 Single Crochet (sc) into same stitch
  • 1 Single Crochet into each one of the next 6 stitches
  • Make 8 Single Crochets into the chain 6 space
  • Slip Stitch into chain 4 space
  • Chain 3
  • Work 3 Treble Crochets into chain 4 space
  • Chain 3, Slip Stitch into same chain 4 space
  • Make 8 Single Crochets into the chain 6 space
  • 1 Single Crochet into last stitch of the round
  • Slip Stitch into the 1st Single Crochet of the round, leave a little tail and cut the yarn off.

ROUND 3

  • Start with a Slip Knot.
  • Pull it through the stitch on top of the center Treble Crochet and chain 1
  • 1 Single Crochet into same stitch
  • 1 Half Double Crochet into next stitch
  • 1 Double Crochet (dc) into next stitch
  • 2 Double Crochets, 2 chains, 2 Double Crochets into the next stitch
  • 1 Double Crochet into next stitch
  • 1 Half Double Crochet (hdc) into each one of the next 4 stitches
  • 1 Double Crochet into next stitch
  • 2 Treble Crochets, 2 Chains, 2 Treble Crochets into the next stitch
  • 1 Treble crochet into next stitch
  • Skip chain 3, Work a Slip Stitch on each one of the next 3 Treble Stitches
  • Skip chain 3, 1 Treble crochet into next stitch
  • 2 Treble Crochets, 2 Chains, 2 Treble Crochets into the next stitch
  • 1 Double Crochet into next stitch
  • 1 Half Double Crochet into each one of the next 4 stitches
  • 1 Double Crochet into next stitch
  • 2 Double Crochets, 2 chains, 2 Double Crochets into the next stitch
  • 1 Double Crochet into next stitch
  • 1 Half Double Crochet into next stitch
  • 1 Single Crochet into next stitch
  • Slip stitch into the 1st single crochet of the round to join

ROUND 4

  • Chain 3
  • 1 Double Crochet into each one of the next 4 stitches
  • 2 Double Crochets, 2 chains, 2 Double Crochets into the next chain 2 space
  • 1 Double Crochet into each one of the next 10 stitches
  • 2 Double Crochets, 2 chains, 2 Double Crochets into the next chain 2 space
  • 1 Double Crochet into each one of the next 10 stitches
  • 2 Double Crochets, 2 chains, 2 Double Crochets into the next chain 2 space
  • 1 Double Crochet into each one of the next 10 stitches
  • 2 Double Crochets, 2 chains, 2 Double Crochets into the next chain 2 space
  • 1 Double Crochet into each one of the next 5 stitches
  • Leave a long tail for sewing and cut the yarn off
  • Grab the yarn needle, skip chain 3, insert the needle into the next stitch, insert needle into the back loop of last Double Crochet to make invisible and fasten off by using the Yarn Needle.
