This fun llama craft is the perfect way to learn to start weaving. Use our free template and recycled cardboard to make this llama with no drama!
DIY Llama with Woven Blanket
Supplies
- Free Llama Pattern
- Cardboard sheet
- Yarn (several colors)
- Tapestry needle
- Pom poms
- Clear tape (optional)
- Craft glue
- Sharpies or markers
Directions
Step 1
Download, print and cut out the free llama pattern.
Trace the llama template onto a piece of cardboard, then cut out.
Step 2
Wrap the yarn once around the llama’s body and tie a knot. Keep the knotted part on the backside of the llama cardboard base.
Step 3
Start to wrap the yarn around the body of the llama. Keep small gaps between each wrap of yarn so that you can weave it later.
Step 4
Wrap the entire stomach area of the body with yarn. Finish off the yarn by taping the cut end to the back of the llama base.
Step 5
Thread a tapestry needle with a different color of yarn.
Tape the cut end to the back of the llama base. Then bring the yarn to the front of the llama.
Step 6
Start to weave the yarn over and under the base yarn strands (white).
Step 7
After reaching the other end, draw the needle to the next row. For the first row, if you are weaving over the odd strands and under the even strands, then do the opposite for the next row, weaving over the even strands and under the odd strands.
When done with this color of yarn cut the yarn and tape the cut end to the back of the cardboard llama base. Or you could knot the yarn to secure.
Step 8
Continue this process using other colors of yarn.
You can make the stripes as thin or as thick as you would like.
Use as many colored yarns as you would like.
Step 9
Now add facial features with a Sharpie or marker, such as an eye, nose, cheek and mouth. We also added a border around the llama pattern, and a neck decoration.
Glue some pom poms along the bottom side of the woven blanket.
