A printable recipe card is at the end of the post.

Makes 16 scones.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • ½ stick butter, grated (1/4 cup)
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • Powdered sugar

Directions:

Step 1

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Step 2

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon until well blended.

Step 3

Cut the butter into the flour mixture until it is crumbly. A pastry blender or two forks work well to break the butter up into very small pieces.

Step 4

In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, maple syrup, and milk.

Step 5

Make a well in the flour mixture and add in the egg mixture.

Fold the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and continue to fold until all the ingredients are well incorporated.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface.

Roll it out until the dough is ¼ inch thick.

Step 7

Using a 2 inch circle cutter to cut out circles in the dough.

Step 8

Place the dough circles on the prepared baking sheet.

Using your finger, make 3 holes in each circle for the eyes and mouth of the ghost.

Bend and shape the dough into a spooky ghost shape.

Step 9

Brush the scones with maple syrup.

Bake for 10-15 minutes.

Step 10

Once the scones are completely cooled, sprinkle powdered sugar on top.

Tip: Don’t sprinkle powdered sugar when the scones are hot because the sugar will melt!

Helpful Tips

  • The dough will be sticky so just use some extra flour to help it not stick to the work surface.
  • Make sure you stretch out your dough or your holes will close up during baking.
  • If the holes do close while baking, use a straw to make the holes again while the dough is still warm.
  • To make these ghost scones extra spooky, add strawberry syrup as fake blood.
