Valentine truffles are great gifts for men and women, but they can be so expensive to buy. The good news is that you can easily make your own Valentine cake truffles for a fraction of the price of store bought!
If you have ever made cake balls, this recipe is very similar to a cake ball truffle method using a boxed cake mix. The extra step of shaping the balls into hearts is worth it to make these pretty Valentines desserts.
These yummy homemade truffles are just like cake ball truffles, however they are shaped into hearts, which makes them perfect for holiday parties and Valentines Day sweet treats.
The inside is a rich and creamy filling surrounded by hard chocolate candy.
These Valentine desserts are perfect displayed on a tray, or you can wrap each one individually as a gift. They also make great bake sale ideas!
Valentines Day Cake Truffles Recipe
Prep: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Yields: 32 Truffles
Ingredients
- Boxed cake mix (any flavor, but we chose Vanilla; do not get cake mix with pudding)
- 3 eggs
- ⅓ cup oil (canola or vegetable oil)
- 1 cup water
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 12 ounce Bag of Pink Candy Melts
- White and Red Candy Melts (about 1/2 cup of each)
- Pink gel food coloring
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13×9 baking pan and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cake mix, egg, water, and oil.
Add in food coloring and whisk until well incorporated.
Pour cake batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 25-35 minutes.
While the cake bakes, set out your cream cheese so that it can warm up and soften. I often put the cream cheese on top of my oven so the radiant heat will soften the cheese, but be sure that it doesn’t melt!
Let the cake cool for 15-20 min.
Crumble the cake into a large bowl and add the softened cream cheese.
Beat with a mixer until the cream cheese is well incorporated and a dough texture has formed.
Shape the dough into 1 inch balls.
Then, using your fingers, shape the cake balls into hearts by slightly flattening the ball and then pinching the top in two places and pinching the bottom to make a heart shape.
Melt the pink candy melts according to the package instructions. Be sure to stir every 30 seconds to prevent the melts from burning in the microwave.
Dip each heart into pink candy melts and set on parchment paper.
Place a few red candy melts into one zip-top plastic sandwich bag, and a few white chocolate melts in another bag.
Melt the bags in the microwave on 15 second intervals, squishing the bag in-between to get all of the chunks melted.
Cut a tiny piece of the corner off each of the baggies and drizzle red and white candy on half of each heart truffle.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
